Dell Users’ Private Information Isn’t In Safe Hands

After Facebook had its 120 million accounts hacked, Dell has fallen into the trench of hacking as well. What appeared to be a safe place for users once, has now become hell for the safety-cravers.
On 9th November, according to the statement provided by the company, unauthorized activity was observed. The activity was observed on Dell’s network for extracting customer information. The company was quick at identifying and disrupting the hackers, however; isn’t sure of the intensity of the damage made.
As per the company’s statement, hackers may have taken a chunk of the customer’s private information. Including their names, email addresses, and passwords. However; the crucial information, such as credit card details, is still reported to be safe.
Dell claims to have taken countermeasures for the sake of preventing such activity from happening in the future. It has changed its passwords and recruited a digital forensic firm to identify the particulars of the attack.
In their statement they have stated, “upon detection of the attempted extraction, Dell immediately implemented countermeasures and initiated an investigation. Dell also retained a digital forensics firm to conduct an independent investigation and has engaged law enforcement.”
Considering the actions Dell is taking on its end, it is wise for the customers to remain vigilant as well. Hence if you too are a part of the Dell clan, it is advisable to change your password as soon as possible. Also, if you’ve used the same password for some other service, reset it to a new one now.
Here’s what the company has to say regarding the incident
“Since this is a voluntary disclosure, and there is no conclusive evidence that customer account information was extracted, it would be imprudent to publish potential numbers when there may be none.”
Looking back over the data breaches that have taken place during the year, it won’t be wrong to comment that the online world is not that safe. Several claims were left unfulfilled, several promises were broken, as hackers kept raiding the zones that were once stated to be safe.
It’s time to keep your private accounts and even your wordpress accounts secure from your end.
Nevertheless, it’s a risky game after all. For now, the measures have been taken and users are free to use the network as before.
