This 3D Editing Selfie App Is Changing The Selfie Game Forever!

Crooked photos are a norm; more like an inevitable phenomenon that you can’t prevent. If it’s a solo image, it ought to come out as ugly in the first go; if it’s a group picture, one person or the other has to be a photo bomber. However; thanks to the retouch options available in our smartphones, beautification has become easy. But now, the bar is about to set with this 3D editing selfie application.
Meitu, a Chinese application, allows its users to turn themselves into heavenly creatures. Confused? Its beauty retouch feature is more than what other image editing apps ordinarily offer. With the 3D Reshape, the app permits users to virtually rotate their faces in whichever direction they like; up, down, or sideways. The final result that comes out is natural and worth sharing.

How is this editing different from the conventional? A company’s spokesperson says, “traditional image processing technology can only perform plane stretching in two dimensions, and the image has no depth information and therefore is unable to truly reflect the changes in the posture of real life.”
The application is built to intelligently take clues from static images while applying face recognition and reconstruction technologies for the sake of generating 3D information of the user’s face. By doing so, it understands how the user’s face looks when rotated up, down, and sideways. This helps Meitu make the photos appear more natural and real.
Meitu’s Research and Development team, consisting of 200 people, took the responsibility to identify and collect human expressions. The team was able to gather 18 unique facial expressions from a bunch of 1,200 people belonging to different sets of age groups. With the information in hand, the app developers were able to devise a software that has now proved to be a blessing for the photo-freaks.
Group photos are the most vulnerable to distortions. It’s one person looking weird and the whole image goes into the trash. The good news is, Meitu’s 3D editing can also rescue group images from being ridiculed.
However; with success comes challenges. Meitu is now facing a lot of privacy concerns which are capable of stripping away its fame. The app, apart from access to the user’s phone camera, requires access to their GPS, Wi-Fi data connection, SIM data, and a lot more, which has raised suspicion amongst users.
“It’s mostly par for the course junk. I didn’t see anything overtly evil, but that doesn’t mean there’s not something more serious in there. The thing [that’s noteworthy] is the number of different analytics and ad-tracking packages they’ve loaded into the app. I counted at least half a dozen different packages in there. You don’t generally need that many unless you’re selling data,” says Jonathan Zdziarski, an iOS security researcher and forensics expert.
Apart from the popular 3D editing thing, Meitu has also come up with a ‘hand-drawn selfie’ feature that turns images into caricatures. Isn’t this cool?
With photo 3D editing taking a new turn, Meitu has sown the seeds for success. It was in July that the company made a $30 million investment in Gengmei, which is a social media platform that connects users with plastic surgeons around the work; somewhat like LinkedIn but of a different nature. Hence, by coming up with such networking ideas, Meitu plans on providing customers with long-lasting solutions to their daily beauty concern.
